The very best stories are always people stories. How did she do that? What's he cooking up next? What motivates these folks? I like to make portraits of people not against sterile backgrounds, but where they work, or invent, or explore—or plow. That's Gordon Moore, one of the early geniuses of the tech age, whom I photographed in silhouette leaving the front door of the company he founded on what would turn out to be his very last visit. And speaking of Gordon Moore, the photo next to him is of three women I met in the village of KwaMhlanga, South Africa, at the moment they first discovered one of Moore's legacies: the magic of a tablet computer.
